Sworn in on January 9th, 2023, Mayor Sheng Thao stepped into office amongst rising crimerates, a failing 9-1-1 system, rising homelessness, a devastating ransomware attack, and a recordbudget deficit caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite these challenges, Mayor Thao got to work reviving Oakland’s groundbreaking CeasefireProgram, investing in new 9-1-1 infrastructure and hiring, redeploying walking officers andtraffic enforcement, securing additional CHP support thanks to her partnership with GovernorGavin Newsom, committing a record invests into affordable housing, passing a historic generalplan, and balancing Oakland’s budget without any layoffs or major cuts to critical public safetyservices. This work is yielding positive change, and Oakland is getting back on track.
Now one Piedmont hedge fund manager has paid thousands of out-of-town signature gatherersto put a recall on the ballot that will cost taxpayers MILLIONS in an attempt to buy themselvesa Mayor who will do their bidding.
