Claim: Mayor Sheng Thao’s actions caused crime to increase.
Fact: Crime remained at record lows until 2019, but the pandemic and cuts to resources for the Ceasefire program triggered a significant spike. By 2021, two years before Mayor Thao took office, we saw our highest homicide rate since 2006.
Since redeploying Ceasefire and securing state support, we're on track to achieve the lowest crime rates since the pandemic began
Claim: Mayor Sheng Thao wrongfully fired the former police Chief.
Fact: When the former Chief was accused of wrongdoing by an independent investigation, Mayor Thao initially put the former Chief on non punitive leave so she could properly investigate the situation. The former Chief chose to use that time to falsely claim the federal oversight of OPD was corrupt and risked any chance to get Oakland out from under federal oversight.
His direct actions have forced the judge to keep Oakland under federal oversight.
Claim: Mayor Sheng Thao is being charged by the FBI for corruption.
Fact: Mayor Thao has not been charged with any crimes and has been told she is not the center of this investigation. Many elected and non elected officials have been raided by the FBI and were later found innocent: including President Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, former Mayor Willie Brown, the Black Panthers, Barry Bonds, to just name a few.
Meanwhile, the recall is being sued for potentially violating ethics laws in order to hide their one Piedmont-based donor.
Claim: Mayor Sheng Thao lost Oakland a multi-million retail grant.
Fact: While Mayor Thao takes responsibility for the city departments missing this grant, she should also be credited for securing hundreds of millions in additional grants for the City of Oakland since being sworn in as well as securing additional support from CHP, the Governor, and the Attorney General to improve public safety.
